Types of R11 Insulation

Choosing the correct type of R11 insulation depends on your project needs—thermal resistance, moisture control, or soundproofing. At Roofing4us, we stock a wide variety of R11 insulation types to match every requirement:

1. Kraft Faced R11 Insulation

This type comes with a paper vapor retarder facing, making it ideal for exterior walls, ceilings, and floors where moisture control is essential. It is commonly used in areas prone to condensation and is easy to install between framing members.

2. Unfaced R11 Insulation

Unfaced insulation lacks a vapor barrier, making it best suited for interior walls or multi-layer applications. It offers excellent sound absorption and flexibility in residential and commercial spaces.

3. Foil-Faced R11 Insulation

With a reflective foil facing, this insulation acts as both a vapor barrier and a radiant barrier. It’s beneficial in hot climates or spaces where radiant heat reduction is necessary, such as attics or sun-facing walls.

4. FSK-25 Faced R11 Insulation

Faced with Foil-Scrim-Kraft, this type offers flame resistance and is commonly used in HVAC ductwork or mechanical rooms. It provides fire performance with added insulation value.

5. Basement Blanket R11 Insulation

Designed for basement walls, this insulation is typically paired with a PSK (Polypropylene-Scrim-Kraft) facing. It delivers a continuous insulation layer with vapor control—perfect for below-grade applications.

What is R-Value?

The R-value is a measure of thermal resistance, or how well a material resists the flow of heat. In simple terms, it tells you how good an insulating material is at keeping heat in during winter and out during summer.

  • Higher R-value = Better insulation.
  • It’s used to compare the effectiveness of different insulation types.
  • Commonly measured in units of ft²·°F·hr/BTU (but you’ll usually just see the number, like R-11, R-30, etc.).
  • The R-value depends on the type of material, thickness, and density.
  • R-11 insulation is typically used for interior walls, providing modest soundproofing and thermal insulation.
  • R-30 or higher would be used in areas such as attics, where greater insulation is required.

Selecting the Right R-11 Insulation

  • Choosing the appropriate R-11 insulation depends on your specific application:
  • Unfaced Batts: Ideal for interior walls where moisture is not a concern.
  • Kraft Faced Batts: Suitable for exterior walls and ceilings, providing a built-in vapor barrier.
  • Foil-Faced Batts: Ideal for areas exposed to radiant heat, such as attics.
  • FSK-25 Faced Batts: Recommended for applications requiring fire-resistant vapor barriers.
  • Rolls: Perfect for covering large, unobstructed areas efficiently
