In addition to bringing in an abundance of natural light, venting skylights can be opened to create a chimney effect, drawing air upward to improve air quality within your home. Curb mount skylights are designed to be mounted on a site-built curb like a shoebox top. They are ideal for replacing existing curb mount skylights, including old plastic bubble skylights, and can be installed on almost every type of roof, whether it’s flat, low slope, or standard slope.

VELUX VCM manual “Fresh Air” skylights include an insect screen and hook which can be turned using a ZCT 300 telescoping control rod (sold separately) or you can purchase a ZZZ 212 crank handle if your VCM skylight will be installed within reach. We are often asked why we don’t include those accessories with the skylight. The answer is: most customers order 2+ skylights, most VCM skylights are installed out of reach, and a control rod can operate multiple skylights. If we included a control rod and crank handle in every box, many control rods and crank handles would go straight to a landfill. Selling these products separately reduces waste and prevents customers from paying for something they don’t need.

Optional factory-installed solar powered shade has a built-in solar panel, rechargeable battery-operated control system, and a basic remote control. This lets you control the amount of light with only the touch of a button, and there’s no need for electrical wiring or an electrician during installation. VELUX skylights with the Go Solar option also include an internet gateway, which allows you to control the shade with your smartphone and enable automatic programs that boost energy efficiency.

The room darkening shade utilizes a double-pleated honeycomb structure with an interior aluminum coating to block even the brightest sunlight, making it ideal for bedrooms, entertainment rooms or any other space where light control is important. By helping prevent thermal heat gain, skylight shades can improve the energy efficiency of your skylights by up to 40% compared to skylights without shades.

• Tempered glass is an option for VCM skylights, but it doesn’t meet building codes in California, Minnesota, or if the skylight is installed out of reach
